Statement of Purpose: Why Do I Want to Be a Storyteller?
As a quiet, solitary man with some inner demons within my soul, I
have sympathized with movie characters that do not quite “fit in.” I had
very few friends as a child and teenager, and the pain of that
loneliness and alienation is something that is always with me. I feel
compelled to bring those experiences, those feelings, those challenges
to the screen—to focus on characters who, for a variety of reasons,
“have it tough”—characters who somehow manage to survive their
circumstances, and learn about themselves and find a few sympathetic
souls in the world who understand.
I root for the underdog: the one humble figure whom everyone seems to
overlook—for this character is not the star football captain, nor the
adventurous action hero, nor the A-list leading man. The world seems to
ignore or cannot see the rich inner depth that lies within that
seemingly insignificant underdog. I want to write stories that explore
that type of character, who everyday, must find his or her way to make
meaning of their life and find some sort of happiness when things don’t
go their way. I want to introduce audiences to characters who have their
own personal challenges and quiet victories—characters that have to dig
deep within their soul to find the means to contend with their demons,
their detractors, their doubters. Ultimately, I want to be a storyteller
because that is my way of showing the world who I am.
